The Radhaus Cycling Team has returned from Kelheim after an incredible week in Bavaria at Germany’s oldest 24-hour bicycle race, Kelheim Race24. Racing alongside some of the strongest competition in the sport, our two relay teams finished near the top among more than 100, including 25 professional teams. Our solo rider also turned in an outstanding performance, riding more than 300 miles in 24 hours and finishing high in the rankings with unshakable positivity.
What we’ll remember most won’t be our finishing positions, or how exhausted we were at the break of dawn, it will be the amazing people we met and the new friends we made. As the only Americans in the race, and the first American teams to ever participate, the expectations were huge. We arrived knowing very little German, though we tried our best. That never seemed to matter, however. Everywhere we went, people welcomed us as friends. Somehow we all spoke the same language once the race began and we fit right in.
The most important thank you goes to our adopted family at Schneider Weisse brewery for taking such good care of us. They helped us set up our pit area, guided us through race staging before the start, and welcomed us with an impressive paddock complete with cots, tables, a stocked refrigerator, and custom Radhaus banners. Their generosity and attention to detail made us feel at home from the moment we arrived. We couldn’t have asked for better hosts.
Our home for the week, Ritterschanke Burg Randeck (Knight’s Tavern), is built into the walls of a medieval castle and was one of the highlights of the trip. We enjoyed breakfast and dinner there every day, and the food was simply fantastic, among the best in the region. The hotel owners sat with us over beers late into the night. Those evenings, being treated like family, turned out to be our favorite memories from the trip.
We also spent time at Riedenburger Brauhaus, where the hospitality was every bit as memorable as the beer. A visit to Klosterbrauerei Weltenburg, nestled in the Danube Gorge, was another highlight and a place every beer lover should experience at least once. Weltenburger even let us borrow their CEO, an accomplished cyclist, to join our masters team on the racecourse. Always with a smile, he was a sensational addition and is now our dear friend.
The race results certainly made us proud, but the experience at such a special event meant far more. Bavaria has always been a central part of the Radhaus character. Spending a week there immersed in the festival atmosphere reminded us why Bavaria is also a second home. The warmth and generosity that greeted us was extraordinary. It was an honor to represent both Radhaus and the United States in such a unique and memorable way.
Thank you to everyone who followed the trip and cheered us on from home. We hope to be back again, and again.
